The talented Mr Daniel

A few years ago I wrote an article about Henry Daniel, one of the most talented porcelain makers in 19th Century Britain, and as I have quite a few items by this maker new up in the shop, I thought to bring the story again - I always find it one of the most fascinating stories among all the porcelain makers.

If you love pieces by H&R Daniel, you are living in the right era. For many years the pieces were unrecognised, as Henry Daniel hardly ever marked his wares and they are easy to confuse with Spode, whom Daniel worked with before setting up his own factory, and other great makers such as Ridgway or Alcock. Then, in the 1970s, interest increased and a few intrepid experts such as Michael Berthoud and Geoffrey A. Godden started writing about Henry Daniel.
This sparked a whole generation of ardent Daniel collectors, so most pieces that had been circulating in a confused market were bought up within a decade or two, and pieces became extremely rare. And rare equals expensive, so in recent decades it has been really difficult to find them.
Fast forward to a few years ago, and many of these collectors started downsizing, flooding the market with their gorgeous collections. Suddenly, you can find Daniel pieces in the British auction houses, and therefore with traders like myself. And, lucky for you all, it has brought the prices down!
Today I am showing a few pieces I have had up in the shop for a while, but got a little neglected, but also a bunch of pieces that have been wiling away on my shelf. Some are in great condition, and some in less good condition, which is reflected in the price. Have a browse and ask me any questions - and more will probably surface in the next couple of months!
I must give some special attention to the pair of maroon potpourri vases with birds and flowers - this style of vase was only identified as made by Daniel a few years ago. It is rare to find a pair together in such good condition, so however much I love having them around, I am hoping they'll find a forever home this time...
