Cups and plates by Yates

A while ago I bought a tea service at an auction that was sold to me as Ridgway. But as soon as I saw the pattern, I realised that the pattern was in fact a famous Yates pattern - yet the shape and style of the service is indeed very close to that of Ridgway. Today I am offering the whole service; it is in great condition and absolutely stunning.
This pattern is number 10378, and it is famous for its bold gilt shark teeth pattern and the fine floral reserves on each item. This style of an underglaze deep cobalt blue ground with rich gilding and beautiful floral reserves was very popular in the 1810s and 1820; as rooms were still lit by candles, you can imagine how the flickering light would have reflected beautifully by all that gilt.
Until about 1805, it was very difficult for factories to achieve an even blue ground colour, but at some point the kilns became more stable, and a new fashion developed of deep cobalt blue ground colours.
This tea service has a beautiful robust teapot in a typical Yates shape, with strong fluted surface and a nicely pointed cover. The teacups, however, are almost identical to the ones Ridgway made. In fact, I have had Ridgway tea services that had half their cups made by Yates; the factories were located very close to each in Shelton, so Yates must have supplied blanks to Ridgway if they got in trouble because they had over-promised to their clients.
The service is now available, as well as one single plate in another pattern with floral reserves and shark teeth, but with a white ground.
