This is a beautiful teacup trio from around the year 1880 made by Edwin J.D. Bodley. The Bodley pottery was well known for their interesting cup shapes, and they closely followed the fashion of the time of "Japonism", a renewed interest in Japanese art.

Japanese designs had of course come to Europe for centuries on the imported china ware, often supplied via the Dutch, Chinese or Portuguese as Britain could not trade directly with Japan, which had no direct trade relations with most of the world. But in the 1850s trade relations were restored and this created a new interest in Japanese art. While previously the knowledge Japanese design had been limited to the Imari teawares, now Japanese prints made their way particularly to Paris, where they influenced the artists of the time such as Van Gogh, Degas and Monet.

This set is a little work of art and it combines a typical British love of birds with Japanese influences. Its shape has been used for many different patterns in this period: the cup is cleanly potted from fine bone china and the walls are very straight, with a simple loop handle. The cup would also be excellent for coffee as it is narrow in shape (Bodley made coffee cups in this shape as well, but they tended to be of a concave shape, with the rim narrower than the foot).

The most striking aspect of the set is the pairs of gilt birds that are fluttering around the items. They are busy with what seems to be a next in a tree, and there are also some dragonflies and butterflies. The colours are a wonderful dark green, light grey/blue and several shades of gilt. The gilt has been tooled into an ochre ground, which creates an effect of texture and depth.

The underside of the items the pattern number painted on the underside (7/4200 on the cup and side plate, 5/4200 on the saucer) and the saucer and side plate have BODLEY impressed. There is no date marking but based on other known items and pattern numbers, I estimate this set to be from around 1880.

CONDITION REPORT The set is in excellent antique condition with no damage, repairs or crazing and only the very slightest of wear, virtually not visible. There are some dents on the reverse of the side plate - this is from production and has been glazed over by the potter.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameters) cup 6.7cm (2 5/8"), saucer 14cm (5.5"), side plate 18cm (7 1/8").
