This is a very stunning teacup and saucer made by Wedgwood between 1800 and 1815.

Wedgwood is one of the original great potteries of Staffordshire in England. While Spode, Minton, Davenport and others were always experimenting with new styles and materials, Wedgwood was known for sticking to tradition and still produces great tableware today. Their designs may not always be the most forward thinking, but they are iconic the world over and always of great quality.

What made Wedgwood most famous was their excellent neo-Classicist designs, which they excelled at in the early 19th Century and some of which are still in production today (the famous Jasperware series for instance). This cup is of that fashion: the clean lines of the design and the large flower design are a clear move away from the Chinese-inspired designs that had been so popular in the late 18th Century.

The cup and saucer are made with 22Kt gilt as its only colour, and a delicate grey/black bat printed outline for the Lily of the Valley flowers. This amount of gilt would have cost a fortune so if you imagine an entire tea set like this, with probably a teapot as well, you can imagine how wealthy one would have needed to be to afford a set like this. The items are made of early bone china that is still a little greyish on the underside of the saucer, but the cup is bright white on the inside although it does have a few firing specs. In the years to follow, the recipe for the bone china as well as the skill of firing bone china improved and you would see a gradual improvement of the whiteness and smoothness of porcelain.

The cup has a beautiful square "French handle" covered in a hand painted gilt pattern.

CONDITION REPORT The cup is in perfect antique condition with no damage, crazing or repairs, and only the lightest spots of rubbing to the gilt. The saucer has some stacking wear on the surface and also a little star-line in the glazing in the well of the saucer. This is not visible at all at the underside, which means it does not go through the porcelain and is superficial. Both issues can clearly be seen in the pictures. Otherwise the saucer has no damage. Both items ring beautifully when tapped; there is no crazing.

DIMENSIONS (diameters) cup 9cm (3.5"), saucer 14.5cm (5 3/4").

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS.
