On offer is a beautiful teacup and saucer made by Coalport in 1885. The set is in the "Japonism" style, which was popular at the time. Coalport excelled in creating teaware in this fashion at the time and it contributed to a revival of its leading style.

Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th Century Staffordshire, coming out with many innovative designs. Many of their items are now collectors' items and this is certainly the case for the Japonism items.

The Japonism style emerged in the 1870s after trade relations with Japan had been restored and many Japanese art prints found their way to the Western market, influencing both art and useful objects. You can see the influence in the application of the delicate blossoms, which have been applied in a slight relief in enamels and gilt, as well as the deep cobalt blue colour. The cup and saucer are also nicely fluted in their surface moulding, in a pattern that reminds you of the early 19th Century Swansea and Wedgwood "Paris fluted" designs - combining the traditional English/neo-Classical with the more modern Japanese influences. Lastly, the cup handle deserves attention: it is shaped like a piece of bamboo, clearly inspired by Japanese teaware of the time.

CONDITION REPORT This set is in good condition with hardly any wear (just a bit of rubbing to the gilt on the underside of the cup handle, probably because of stacking). However there is some crazing on both the cup and the saucer and a crazing line is visible on the underside of the well of the saucer - this is only visible on the face of the saucer when using a magnifying glass. This line does not affect the stability of the saucer. The porcelain is bright white without any stains, and the colours are bright and fresh.

Each item carries the Coalport mark and the saucer carries the imprinted production date of 8 January 1885.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameters) cup 7.5cm, saucer 14cm

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS.
