This is a spectacular large tea set made by Charles Wileman in or shortly after 1890. It was made in the Daisy shape and was transfer-printed with the "Paradise Print" pattern in brown. The set consists of seven teacups, saucers, side plates, a milk jug, a slop bowl and two large cake plates.

This set would make a stunning addition to a beautiful interior. It is extremely rare to find a large tea set by Wileman in such beautiful condition!

Wileman (later renamed Shelley and sometimes called Foley) was one of the most respected manufacturers of fine bone china tea sets in the late 19th Century, and many of their products are now collector's items. They made many different shapes of cups and the Daisy shape is a popular one - it drinks easily and makes the transfer-printed pattern stand out beautifully. Its elegantly scalloped saucers are a delight to hold in your hand and the way each item echoes the shape of the others makes them look like the petals of an opened flower.

The Daisy shape with a brown red Paradise Print pattern was registered in 1890. It is a beautifully drawn pattern of trailing daisies and other wild flowers, something Wileman used a lot for their designs, all arranged in a beautiful latticed star pattern. You can imagine flowers being this way in paradise! The style is clearly inspired by the Aesthetic movement of the 1880s, which put life-like flowers, foliage and birds at the centre of design and applied them through simple transfer prints rather than elaborate hand painted designs. Wileman adopted many of these principles without ever signing up to the movement; their wares were wonderfully main stream but you could see the influence of new, cutting edge design trends in them.

CONDITION REPORT The set is in stunning condition for its age. All items are without any damage, wear, repairs or crazing, except one tiny flea bite off the rim of one of the cups - hardly visible. There is no crazing and all items ring true. The porcelain is beautifully white and unstained and the brown prints are still looking fresh.

Kilns were fired on coal in the late 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles, and the glazing surface can be a little uneven in places. This is normal for antique items from the 19th Century. In this set, you will see some of these specks, or scratches - the sign of true hand work!

All pieces carry the famous large Wileman mark in brown. They also carry a printed registration number 115510 (Daisy shape) and the registration number 6239 hand painted in gold.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameter at the widest point): cup 8.9cm (3.5"), saucer 14cm (5.5"), side plate 18.6cm (7 1/4"), cake plate 24.8cm (9 3/4"), bowl 16.5cm (6.5"), milk jug stands 10cm (4") high.

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options.
