On offer is a rare tea service for four, made by Coalport between 1875 and 1891. The set is decorated in the famous "Japanese Grove" pattern. The set consists of a tea kettle, four trios, a cake plate, a slop bowl and a little open sugar bowl.

This Japanese Grove model has been increasingly difficult to find in recent years, so this service is a rare opportunity!

Coalport was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Minton, Ridgway and others and they created very high quality tea and dinnerware.

The "Japanese Grove" pattern was designed by Thomas Blocksidge in the 1870s and used for many different tea and coffee wares during the 1870s and 1880s. It is a layered pattern with flying swallows and a bamboo grove-like background in under-glaze flow blue, and then a gilt overlay was applied on top of the glazing. This design is in the "Japonism" style, which became fashionable in the 1870s after trade relations with Japan had been restored and many oriental patterns flooded the Western market, creating a new fashion. Coalport went through difficult times in that period and Thomas Blocksidge was one of the designers and artists who brought the factory back from the brink by creating very striking designs that spoke to the new fashion of the day.

Some of the items have a crowned back stamp as it was used between 1882 and 1891; others have an earlier stamp without the crown, which was used between 1875 and 1882.

CONDITION REPORT The service is in excellent condition, good for use, with a few minor flaws. The tea kettle has a very slight crack in the lower part of the belly, but the pot does not leak. You can just about see the line in the centre of the second-last picture. The seams of the teapot (where both halves of the mould come together) are slightly visible in the rim, these are not real cracks but a natural ageing of the model. All teacups and saucers are in perfect undamaged condition with only minimal wear; one of the teacups has some crazing. One of the side plates has some more wear than the others. There is one patch of wear on the cake plate. The little tea bowl has heavier rubbing to the gilt; see pictures. The slop bowl is generally in wonderful un-rubbed condition, but there is one mark of what I assume to be an old auction house label, see last picture. There are no chips or cracks to any of the items (except the slight crack to the tea kettle I mentioned). The entire set looks stunning on display and, if used carefully, is safe to use.

Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. This set is relatively free from any firing specks but you will see a few very small specks under the glaze, as well as some blemishes in the gilt that are from the production process.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!
