This is a Tea for One set made by Charles Wileman in or shortly after 1900. It consists of a teacup, saucer, side plate and milk jug, printed with the sweet "Carnations and Floral Band" pattern in green and orange. The shape of the cup is sometimes called "New Fairy" shape, and sometimes "Violet" shape.

Wileman (later renamed Shelley and sometimes called Foley) was one of the most respected manufacturers of fine bone china tea sets in the late 19th Century, and many of their products are now collector's items. They made many different shapes of cups and the Fairy cups were always very popular with their round bellies and pointed handles, which resemble fairy ears - the origin of the name is therefore not a mystery! In 1890 the New Fairy shape with its slightly rounder belly was brought out, giving the cup a bit more body and therefore the drinker gets a little more tea per cup. This shape is sometimes called the Violet shape.

The Carnations and Floral Band design is a beautiful transfer pattern featuring little orange carnations against a beige background and finely printed green foliage. The outline of the transfer pattern was printed in brown, and then the items were glazed over. On top of the glazing, the orange carnations and green foliage were hand enamelled and after another firing in order to meld the layers well, the gilding was painted on by hand.

CONDITION REPORT This set is in excellent antique condition without any damage. There is some sign of wear: the gilding is rubbed commensurate with age; there is some stacking wear on the saucers; and the milk jug is crazed and as a result has become a bit cream coloured. The teacup trio has not crazed and is still bright white - all three items ring true when tapped. All of the signs of wear can be seen on the pictures.

Crazing is the result of the glazing of the item shrinking faster than the body. It is caused at the point of production but is often not visible until decades later, and is therefore a normal sign of ageing that in most cases does not devalue the item.

Kilns were fired on coal in the late 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles, and the glazing surface can be a little uneven in places. This is normal for antique items from the 19th Century. In this set, you will see some of these specks.

All pieces carry the famous large Wileman mark in green. They also carry a printed registration number in green 153594 (New Fairy or Violet shape) and the registration number 7246 hand painted in gold - please note that on the teacup this has almost worn off.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameter at the widest point): cup 9cm, saucer 14.2cm, side plate 17.5cm, jug stands 8cm (3 1/8") high and measures 13cm (5 1/8") from mouth to handle
