This is a stunning dessert service made by Royal Worcester around the year 1870. The service consists of a high footed comport with spectacular parian cherubs and four plates, all hand painted with beautiful bird studies.
The original Worcester pottery was founded in the mid 18th Century and belongs to the group of famous pioneering potteries in Britain. It went through various changes and take overs, and in the mid 19th Century it merged with several other potteries and became what is now called "Royal Worcester". The pottery distinguished itself with its extremely high quality of artwork, hiring the best artists and always coming up with very vivid designs full of flowers, birds and the fruits that are still in production even now.
This stunning little dessert service would probably have been much bigger at its time, but currently only the footed comport and four plates survive - albeit in perfect condition. The comport has two "blanc the chine" parian cherubs playing with a nest of birds, one holding onto the foot in the shape of a dorian column. The ground colour of all the plates is duck egg blue, and each plate is hand painted with absolutely superb birds and insects, each in their own natural environment of reeds, oak branches or berries. The rims have a very slightly jewelled gilt rim. As lavish as the cherubs and the bird paintings are, the plates are potted very simply and this creates a wonderful balance of simplicity and lavish ornament, that is very typical for the late 19th Century Worcester factory. This set would make a really eye-catching feature in either a traditional or a modern interior design, and it is good for (careful) use.
All items are marked with the Royal Worcester impressed mark and an impressed date code for September 1880. The pattern number, written in red, is 8782.
CONDITION REPORT The service is in perfect antique condition. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. The comport is a little loose in its construction (it consists of three parts that are held together with an internal screw) but there is no damage and it is entirely stable when standing. There is no real rubbing to the gilt or the paintings, other than very light handling blemishes and natural disintegration of the gilt as can be expected from an item of this age.
Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.
There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!
DIMENSIONS Plates 22.5cm (8 7/8") diameter; footed comport 25cm (9 3/4") diameter and 26.5cm (10.5") high.
SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS.
