This is a very stunning Ridgway dessert set made in about 1825, which is known as the Regency period. In this period, many very lavish dinner and dessert services were made and this is such a service. The service consists of a dessert comport for compote, a diamond shaped serving dish and ten dinner plates with handles on both sides. The service would originally have had two more plates and several more serving dishes and in fact I have some broken and/or badly repaired items, which I can add if desired - but they are in far inferior condition.

Ridgway was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Minton, Coalport and others and they created very high quality tea and dinnerware. Ridgway had a tradition of a very wide-ranging offer of china products, anything from the most sublime dinnerware to humble toilet pots. It is notoriously difficult to identify their wares and this is one reason their beautiful tea and dinner wares are often underestimated. Except for the pattern number painted in red on the back (1177), this service is unmarked like most Ridgway items, but the reason we know it was made by Ridgway is because of the shape, which corresponds with known items, and the pattern number itself, which is right for the period the plate seems to be from.

An example of this shape can be found in plate 41 of Geoffrey A. Godden's book "An Illustrated Guide to Ridgway Porcelain".

All items in this service have a gadrooned rim and elegant handles - even the plates have handles, presumably to make sure the servants would not touch the food! The comport has an integral saucer to prevent berry compote from leaking onto thetable; it has a hole for the ladle and wonderfully shaped handles and finial. The finial seems to be a cornucopia on the one side, and it looks like the face of a sleeping grey hound on the other side - a very intriguing detail. The pattern on this set is stunning: deep cobalt blue, soft yellow, lavish gilt and beautifully painted flowers. The quality of the flower paintings indicate that this service must have been for an important client; every detail is perfect and artistic and it clearly is the work of master painters rather than apprentices. The lavish gilt had a dual function: it needed to impress visitors (and the dessert service was the most important part of the meal as it would leave the lasting impression on any visitor), but it also served to reflect the candle light. People did not have lamps yet and dinners were taken in candle light, so the more gilt, the lighter the room.

CONDITION REPORT All items are in excellent condition except for two flaws, which do not make it any less usable: the comport has a flake chip off the rim of the saucer, and one of the handles has had a staple repair. This repair is a very good repair done int he 19th Century and ensures that the comport is entirely stable; it is also not very visible thanks to the pattern. Other than this, there are no cracks or chips. Only two of the plates ring true, the others have crazing and therefore sound dull, but all of them look stunning and they do not have visible discolouration. All plates have some knife scratches and wear here and there, but this is rather light and does not distract. On display, the set is absolutely stunning; it will also be good for use.

Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. This set is relatively free from any firing specks but you will see some blemishes.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (including handles, finial etc) Comport stands 18cm (7") high and measures 20cm (8") at widest point; diamond shaped dish 29cm (11.5") X 22cm (8 3/4"); plates 23cm (9") X 21cm (8 1/4").

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS.
