This is an absolutely stunning large dessert service made by Spode around the year 1824. The set was made in the famous Spode Felspar china, which was a bright bone china that included felspar rock, making it exceptionally robust and very suitable for large services like this. The service consists of:

18 square plates

1 large footed open comport with twig handles

4 small square serving dishes

3 large rectangular slightly lifted serving dishes with twig handles

3 diamond shaped serving dishes

2 lidded sauce or compote tureens with butterfly handles.

An identical service is on display in the Spode Museum in Stoke on Trent, on the original place where this service was produced. In a wonderful moment of serendipity, I happened to be standing and admiring that service exactly the moment this service came up for auction - and I won the bid, enabling me to present it here to you!

Josiah Spode was the great pioneer among the 19th Century potters in England. Around the year 1800 he perfected the bone china recipe that has been used by everyone ever since, and he was also the leading potter behind perfecting the technique of transferware, making it possible for English potters to replace the Chinese export china, which had come to an end around that time, with their own. This was fundamental to a thriving industry that would last for about 150 years and provide half the world with their tableware. In the early 19th Century Spode also made this "Felspar" porcelain, which was even stronger thanks to a large percentage of the strong felspar rock in the recipe.

In the early 19th Century, dinner and dessert services were an important part of the social life of the elite, and particularly the dessert service had to be stunning in order to leave guests with a lasting impression of the wealth and power of the owner. This service is such a show piece.

This service is stunning in many ways. It is beautifully potted with moulded rims throughout, interesting square, rectangular and diamond shapes, beautiful little handles shaped like twigs on some of the serving dishes, and two absolutely stunning little lidded sauce or compote tureens with butterfly handles. The decoration is a ground of finely stippled gilt, graceful gilt rim decorations and stunning hand painted flower posies. As hard as it is to believe, each flower posy is unique and carefully painted by hand - as is all the gilt. It is obvious that this service is of the time that the famous Henry Daniel, who started his own very distinguished pottery very shortly after, was in charge of Spode's decorations at the time that this service was produced.

All items have the printed mark Spode Felspar Porcelain in puce, as well as a hand painted pattern number 3765.

This set would be a wonderful gift to an antiques lover, an amazing wedding gift or a unique addition to any collection. It is in perfectly usable condition despite its age.

CONDITION REPORT This service is in stunning condition for its age. The only issues are: the corners of two rectangular serving plates have been broken and were stapled (a popular and effective 19th century method of repair that makes the plate fully stable again) and one of the butterfly handles of the sauce tureens was professionally replaced (this was done very skilfully and is not obvious at all).

There is light rubbing of the gilt throughout but all flower paintings are in their original glory. There are no further chips, cracks or repairs to report and there is no crazing or discolouration - Felspar porcelain did not craze. The set is still excellent for use and absolutely stunning on display.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!
