This is a beautiful tea and coffee cup trio made around 1820, which is known as the Regency period. It is unknown who made the item, but it was probably one of the lesser known factories only known as "Y", "Z" or "189", or perhaps it could have been Yates.

The set consists of a teacup and a coffee cup sharing one saucer, also called a "true trio". In the early 19th Century, this is how cups were sold; as you would never drink tea and coffee at the same time, why invest in an extra saucer?

In the early 19th Century there were at some point 300 potteries in Staffordshire, and artists would move from pottery to pottery, attracted by competitive wages. Unless items are clearly marked, it is often difficult to identify them and I have not been able to clearly identify this trio. The shape corresponds with the cup in plate 789 of Michael Berthoud's book "Compendium of British Cups".

The set is smoothly potted from fine white bone china and it is shaped in the "Old English Fluted" shape, which was the most popular shape around the year 1820. It has an interesting and slightly chaotic pattern of cobalt blue, peach and gilt, with white panels left out that have been filled with excellent flower paintings. These show many typically English species of flowers, the way you can find this still today in any cottage garden. The quality of the painting is high, yet it seems to have done in a rush, pointing to a smaller factory. The slightly chaotic lay-out of the decoration makes the set very charming.

The set is not marked, as was normal at the time, but the saucer carries the hand painted pattern number 817.

CONDITION REPORT The set is in excellent antique condition without any chips, cracks, crazing or wear. Its only flaw is a slight line in the glaze on the underside of the saucer, too weak to pick up in a picture. This line does not go through the porcelain. All items ring nicely when tapped.

Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can also have small firing lines. This set is relatively free from any firing specks but you might see some.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameters): teacup 9.5cm (3 3/4"), coffee cup 7.6cm (3"), saucer 14.5cm (5 3/4").

In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options.
