This is a stunning large dinner plate manufactured by Spode probably between 1805 and 1813. The dating of these plates is problematic and there are different views on it, but given that the plate is not dated and was made of greyish stone china, it must be from after 1805, when Spode bought Turner's recipe for stone china, and 1813, when Spode officially brought out their own Stone China and started to mark their stone china items diligently.

This pattern is called the "Tobacco Pattern" and it is a faithful copy of plates that were produced in China in the Qianlong era (1736-1795). The tobacco leaf was a very popular decoration in Chinese porcelain, and Spode used it in several of their early Chinoiserie designs. This particular one is extremely colourful and has a wonderful juxtaposition of large leaves and flowers, and sprigs with tiny little flowers. There is a bit of gilding on the plate, but not in the usual way to provide borders; the gilt is incorporated into the tobacco leaves in order to give them some sparkle.

As stated, the plate is made of beautiful strong stone china, which is grey in colour and, although smooth, it has tiny pock marks in the surface. There are a few simple flower sprigs on the underside of the rim of the plate.

One unusual quality of this plate is that it is entirely hand painted; most Spode stone china plates of this period were printed in outline and then had the colours filled in by hand with enamel paint.

There are various versions of this pattern around; the original Qianlong full dinner service, this Spode version, and in the 20th Century New York based Mottahedeh made a very faithful copy of it. In 2018, Christie's sold both the original Qianlong and the modern Mottahedeh full dinner services, which belonged to the David and Peggy Rockefeller Estate, for $950,000 and $750,000 respectively; the modern version went for 125 times its auctioneers' estimate!

CONDITION REPORT The plate is in excellent antique condition with no cracks, repairs or crazing. There is some wear to the enamel paint of the flowers, as visible in the pictures.

Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!
