This is a very rare Tea for Two service made by Shelley in or shortly after 1926. The set is made in the famous Queen Anne shape and it has the "Trees and Sunset" pattern. It consists of a teapot, two cups and saucers, a milk jug and saucer, and a sugar bowl. This is a real collectors' item as particularly this pattern is becoming increasingly rare. This would make an amazing wedding gift! Shelley (previously called Wileman and sometimes called Late Foley) was one of the most respected manufacturers of fine bone china tea sets in the late 19th and early 20th Century, and many of their products are now collector's items. They made many different shapes of cups and the Queen Anne shape is one of the most sought after shapes with its peculiar octagonal shape and extremely fine bone china. This set is a beautiful example of the Art Deco style, which started in the mid-1920s and lasted until the Second World War. It is a style that was refreshing, modern and elegant, doing away with the stuffy tradition of the previous decades. The Sunrise and Tall Trees pattern was registered in 1926 and is a beautiful Art Deco image in stylish black, white and just the yellow sun as a colour detail. Strikingly, there is no gilt in this design, making it look very modern. This pattern is one of the most popular and desired, and now very rare! The Queen Anne shape is exceptionally elegant but it is very prone to cracks, so it is very rare to find a set with only very minor damage. The items are marked with the green Shelley mark and the pattern number, 11479. CONDITION REPORT The set is in very good antique condition with only three small flaws. There is a slight stress line in the teapot handle; however, this seems to have happened in production and the handle is stable. The sugar bowl has a small star crack in the bottom, which is visible in the picture. As it will never hold hot liquid, this should be no problem in using it. One of the cups has an extremely faint hairline, too faint to pick up in a picture but it can be seen if held against bright light. This line could potentially turn into a crack later, however if you carefully warm the cup before serving tea, and don't serve it too hot, the cup might still be good for use. Other than this, there is no damage, no wear and no crazing. Exceptionally, the teapot spout, belly and rims are all in perfect condition. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s and early 1900s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures! DIMENSIONS teapot stands 11cm (4 1/4") high incl. finial and measures 23cm (9") from handle to spout; diameters at widest point of teacup 9cm (3.5"); saucer 14.5cm (5 3/4"); sugar bowl 9cm (3.5"); milk jug saucer 13cm (5 1/8"); milk jug stands 5.5cm (2 1/8") high and measures 9cm (3.5") from handle to mouth.
