On offer is a Sèvres cabaret coffee set for two. The set consists of a coffee pot, two cups, a milk jug, a sugar bowl and a beautiful quatrefoil tray.

 

Sèvres porcelain is among the most famous in the world. The French factory started in the 1740s in Vincennes, to be moved to Sèvres in the 1750 under the protection of Madame de Pompadour, the chief mistress of Louise XV and great benefactor to French art and culture. 

 

This cabaret set was made probably in the late 19th Century and is an exact copy of the 1750s and 1760s style, although less finely made. The mark at the bottom of each piece is a genuine Sèvres mark but rather than the usual year letters that would have pointed to a date in the 1700s, it has the initials "LF", probably the initials of the painter.

 

Each item has a portrait of a famous French lady in French royal society:
Madame Dubary (du Barry), a famous mistress of Louis XVI
Madame Elisabeth, the youngest sister of Louis XVI
Madame de Parabire (Parabère), mistress of Philippe d'Orleans, the Régence in the early 18th Century during Louis XV's childhood years
Madame de Genlis, a famous harpist and educator in Paris
Madame de Pompadour, chief mistress of Louis XV
Princesse de Lamballe, confidante of Marie Antoinette

 

Judging by the ages of the women portrayed (Madame de Pompadour is an elderly lady, Madame de Genlis still very young), the design is a genuine one from the 1760s, a few decades before the French Revolution and the demise of French Royalty in the 1890s. This design was repeated in the 1800s, when the Royal family had ceased to be a political taboo and people could openly admire the famous mistresses of French Royalty again. 

 

The ground colour of the items is a typical Sèvres turquoise blue, but the set may have been decorated elsewhere; the dark specks in the blue ground point to the items being re-fired, usually a sign that although the porcelain was made by Sèvres, the decoration was perhaps done in an outside studio. The decoration consists of raised gilt details, cameos with hand painted portraits of the ladies, and panels with beautifully painted flower bouquets. The shape of the cups is called "Gobelet Hébert" and the finial of the coffeepot is in the form of a cherry.

 

CONDITION REPORT This set is in good display condition with hardly any wear, but it has some minor damage and repairs. There is an old star crack on the inside of the milk jug (not obvious on the outside); there is a faint star hairline in one of the cups (hardly visible); there is a star hairline in the belly of the coffeepot (hardly visible); there is a small chip off one of the saucers; the handle of the coffeepot seems to have a firing crack where the upper part meets the pot; and lastly there is a professional repair on the top rim of the coffeepot and the inner rim of the lid, not visible when in position. Except the chip, none of the damages are obvious when in position and the set looks very fresh as all decorations are entirely bright and without any wear.

 

DIMENSIONS Tray 33.5cm (13 1/4") at widest point, coffeepot 17cm (6 3/4") high incl. finial, just 9cm (3.5") high, sugar bowl 8cm (3 1/4") high, cups 6.25cm (2.5") high, saucers 13cm (5 1/8").

  • Your item will be shipped after receipt of funds, unless agreed otherwise in writing. 

    We will ship your items within a maximum of 2 working days after payment (usually quicker). We cannot be held responsible for delivery times once the item has been shipped as this is at the shipper's discretion and, in case of international delivery, can be subject to customs delays, weather, holidays and/or political instability.

    If your delivery failed to appear or was damaged in transit, please let us know as soon as possible and, in case of damage, provide us with pictures of the damaged item and/or packaging. Cut off dates for this are 14 days after shipping, or 2 days after a damaged delivery. We will need to comply with shippers' regulations in order to follow up the issue, but it is vital that you let us know what is wrong as soon as possible. We will do anything we can to follow up faulty deliveries but cannot be held responsible if we have not been notified within the required time period.

  • Cancellations can only be accepted before the item has been shipped. Once an item has been shipped, the transaction cannot be cancelled anymore.


    Returns need to be requested within 2 days of receipt of the item and completed within 14 days from the date they have been agreed in writing.

    If you want to return an item because you changed your mind, you will be responsible for the return shipping. For international deliveries, this will need to be a fully tracked shipping mode. The item is expected to be received back in the same state it was sent - any damage due to insufficient packaging will be your responsibility. We will only pay for return shipping if we have mutually agreed that the item did not satisfy your expectations. A refund will be made immediately after receipt of the item.

    You are subject to the EU Consumers Rights Act, which protects your rights buying over the internet.
