On offer are two beautiful dinner plates from the Rococo period, made by Coalport between 1839 and 1845. This set would make a perfect wedding gift!

Coalport was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Minton, Ridgway and others and they created very high quality tea and dinnerware. Except for the pattern number painted in red on the back (4/412), these plates are unmarked like most Coalport items; retailers wanted to keep secret where their stock was produced because they were worried that their customers would go to the potteries directly and cut out their trade. But an example of these plates can be found in Geoffrey Godden's book "Coalport & Coalbrookdale Porcelains" in plate 145.

The plate is beautifully moulded around the edges with a slight scroll pattern and subtle shell forms. Three panels on the rim allow space for lavish flower arrangements. The borders around the plates are a beautiful deep beige. But the most stunning thing about these plates is the flowers in the centre; they are huge and simple, yet with extraordinarily lively detail. One has a big polychrome tulip, the other a purple periwinkle. These plates were part of a large dinner set of 12 or 18 plates, all of which would have been unique - it would be a stunning sight to see a large table decked out with all these flowers!

CONDITION REPORT The plates are beautiful display but there is one area of damage. One plate has a large crack through the middle, very slightly visible through the flower painting. It does not distract from the beauty of the flower and interestingly the plate still rings true, as the crack is stopped by the base of the plate and does not go into the rim - the plate is therefore stable. The other plate is in excellent condition. There is very little wear to the gilding (just some slight stacking wear, hardly visible) and the flower paintings are in perfect condition.

Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. This set is relatively free from any firing specks but you will see a few very small specks under the glaze.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!
