This is a set of two beautiful large deep plates made by Coalport during the High Regency period in the early 1820s. The plates would have belonged to a large tea or dinner service (and I have a teacup and slop bowl from the same service for sale, please see separate listings). One of the plates is in perfect condition; the other is heavily crazed and is given for free with the good one, to keep both plates together.

Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th Century, coming out with many innovative designs. The pottery emerged around the year 1800 in Shropshire, right on the edge of Staffordshire and near other great makers such as Spode, Minton, Davenport and many others. They went on to become a major potter in the 19th Century and brought out many iconic designs.

The plates were made between 1820 and 1825, a period called "High Regency" and just at the beginning of the Rococo Revival. They have gadrooned rims. Gadrooning relates to the way the rim is worked, which is a technique originally used for silver. As many of the first porcelain artists were originally silversmiths, this technique quickly found its way into the world of porcelain design. The pattern consists of brightly pink coloured little flowers and cobalt blue accents. The pattern is enriched with beautiful gilding.

The plates are slightly different sizes, suggesting that the better plate is perhaps a later replacement of an earlier broken plate from the same service. The plates are deep, suggesting use for porridge, soup or serving.

I have a teacup and a slop bowl in the same pattern, please see separate listings. I'd be happy to give a discount on purchase of all items.

CONDITION REPORT The plates are in good condition without any chips or cracks. The smaller plate is perfect without any crazing or even wear, looking bright white. The larger plate is heavily crazed and discoloured, please see pictures. However, both plates are without damage or repairs.

The items are unmarked, as was often the case with items of this period, except for the pattern  number 629. This number suggests that the pattern is a bit older than the bowl and was used for this later model - it would have been from around 1812, and I have seen it on older tea sets.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameters): 24cm (9.5") and 25cm (9 7/8").

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS.
