This is a beautiful and very striking set of 12 plates made in the Yongzheng era, 1722-1735. They have a wonderful blue and white design of blossoming pomegranate trees and various fish.

The plates are very smoothly potted in blueish glaze, the surface and rims slightly lobed. The decoration was executed under the glaze in blue. All plates are beautifully hand painted with blossoming pomegranate trees in the centre, and a rim of various fish and crustaceans among water weeds in the rim.

The pomegranate is symbolic for happiness because of its red color, and its many seeds are a symbol of numerous children.

The rim contains various fish among water weeds, a popular traditional pattern. Fish in Chinese sounds like the word for "Abundance and Affluence" so the fish symbolizes wealth. There is a carp, the Chinese word "li" sounding similar to the word for "business" and therefore the carp symbolises a wish for good business. The carp also stands for longevity and perseverance, as it struggles against the current of a river. There are two koi fish (or gold fish) swimming in embrace, symbolising passionate love and harmony between opposites; the Chinese word for koi fish, "jin yu", is identical with the words for "gold and abundance". There are also two shrimps in embrace, with a similar symbolism of harmony and abundance.

The plates have some simple flowers on the underside and are marked with a double ring and a painted flower symbol, as was used in the late Kangxi / early Yongzheng era when character marks were not used.

Provenance: from the collection of a Dutch collector, who purchased these in the late 1940s/early 1950s at a local Dutch auction.

CONDITION REPORT The plates are in very good condition, with some minor issues. Five plates have small chips and two plates have tight cracks through the middle, but none of it stands out when on display, and all plates are in stable condition and good for use. The most obvious of these issues are shown in the last few pictures.

Antique porcelain is never perfect. Everything was handwork and kilns were fired on wood or coal, creating a lot of dust and other particles that could get baked into the porcelain by accident. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the time of production. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures.
