This is a very rare offer: a teacup and saucer with hand painted birds and jewelled edges, made by Royal Worcester around 1868.

Royal Worcester was founded in the mid 18th Century and belongs to the group of famous pioneering potteries in Britain. It went through various changes and take overs, and in the mid 19th Century it became what is now called "Royal Worcester". The pottery distinguished itself with its extremely high quality of artwork, hiring the best artists and always coming up with very vivid designs full of flowers, birds and the fruits that are still in production even now.

These bird decorations are stunning in their precision, grace and vivid naturalness. Each bird is different, and each bird seems absolutely alive - you can hear their song when watching them. The colours are bright and when you take a magnifying glass, you can see that each feather is painted with a tiny brush stroke. There seems to be a transfer at the basis of each figure, but the colours have most certainly been applied individually with the greatest skill.

It doesn't stop with the birds, though. The cup and saucer are made of the finest, whitest porcelain and the shape is wonderfully simple and smooth - remember that in those days of coal-fired kilns, it was very difficult to fire cups so smoothly and it would have taken a lot of misfirings to get to a batch of such perfect ones. The rims of the cup and saucer are stunning as well. They are jewelled with little porcelain balls that have been stuck onto the item, and the gilding is incredibly perfect and finely painted.

The cup has a very faint impressed Royal Worcester mark but no printed mark. Royal Worcester started using their famous printed marks around this time, but not every cup got them yet. There is a hand painted pattern number 8292

CONDITION REPORT This set is in perfect antique condition with no damage and very little wear; only the gilding on the cup handle is a little worn and there might be the odd tiny scratch on gilding elsewhere, but generally the cup still looks as new.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameters): cup 7.5cm (3"), saucer 13.5cm (5 1/4").

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS.
