This is a super romantic piece of late 19th Century antique: a cabaret set to serve tea for two, also called a "tete a tete", made in the 1890s. It is unknown who made the set, but whoever did made a beautiful piece and stuck an imitation Vienna mark at the bottom. The set consists of a large tray, two cups and saucers, a teapot, a milk jug and a lidded sucrier or sugar bowl.

This set is in imitation of the famous Vienna factory, which excelled in these fine eggshell sets with beautiful gilt and cherubs. Although it is not an original, it is a fabulous piece, made with care and partly hand painted. The decorations seem to be litho printed but they have been very finely coloured in by hand; all gilding has been applied by hand, partly in raised gilding. The ground colour is a beautiful maroon. There are many different depictions of cherubs and angels, mostly floating, some coming through clouds - it is an utterly romantic piece that would make a fabulous gift to a loved one.

The set has an imitation Vienna "beehive" mark at the bottom with the word "AUSTRIA" written below it; it could be made by any number of Austrian, German or Bohemian makers.

This set is excellent for use but also a fabulous piece for display.

CONDITION REPORT The set is in excellent antique condition with only a few minor flaws. The tip of the teapot spout has been broken and glued, but is in stable and usable condition (see picture). One saucer has a very faint star hairline crack in the well, hardly visible, that is stable as it is contained by the foot rim of the saucer. There is minor rubbing of the gilt and the flowers in various places, particularly on the gilded handles; however, as a whole the set looks fabulously bright and in very good condition. There is no other damage or extreme wear.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS: tray 42.5cm (16 3/8") long and 28cm (11") wide, teapot measures 24cm (9.5") from handle to spout and stands 14cm (5.5") high incl. finial, milk jug measures 13cm (5 1/8") from handle to mouth and stands 9cm (3.5") high, sucrier 12cm (4 3/4") wide and stands 11cm (4 1/4") high incl. finial, teacup 4.7cm (1 7/8") high and 8cm (3 1/8") diameter, saucer 13cm (5") diameter.

In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options.
