This is a very rare offer of a beautifully embossed sauce boat made by Worcester between 1765 and 1770 in their 1st or "Dr Wall" period. The sauce boat has roses and fuchsias embossed on the outside, and a blue on white transfer printed floral pattern on the inside.

Worcester was one of the first potteries in Britain to create items in porcelain. Alongside other great potteries such as Derby, Chelsea and Bow, they pioneered a new industry that would grow out to be huge in the following century.

The porcelain used is characteristic for the period; it has a slightly cream/grey hue as it contains no or very little bone ash. It has a very particular deep yet clear sound when tapped, which is unique for items of this period.

Sauce boats became hugely fashionable in the 18th Century - it says a lot about the diet at the time; a good meal obviously had a generous helping of gravy or sauce. They were originally made of silver and until the mid-19th Century these silver boats would be given to the Chinese porcelain producers to copy. Once porcelain could be manufactured in England, particularly Worcester made a huge quantity of these sauce boats in many different designs.

This design with a wonderful embossing on the outside of roses and fuchsias is relatively rare. It has four charming little peaks on the rim, and a graceful handle with a big thumb rest, allowing you to pick it up safely even with greasy fingers. The inside of the boat is decorated with a dark blue underglaze transfer pattern of flowers.

The sauce boat is marked with a closed crescent on the underside - all transfer printed items were marked with a closed crescent and the hand painted ones with an open crescent. A picture of it can be found in Henry Sandon's book "Worcester Porcelain 1751-1793", plate 112.

This is a very unique offer to own a rare item by one of the great potters from the 18th Century, and needless to say it is very rare to find one that has no damage, wear or repairs at all.

CONDITION REPORT The sauce boat is in absolutely perfect condition with no wear, damage or repairs. It rings beautifully.

Kilns were fired on coal in the 1700s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. This set is made of very early porcelain and therefore has some specks and uneven areas that occurred during the second firing.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 18th and 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS 17cm (6 3/4") from mouth to handle and 9.5cm (3 3/4") high at highest point
