On offer is a very fabulous large Wileman tea set for nine in the famous "Daisy" shape. The pattern is called "Paradise Print", made in or shortly after 1890 and it is printed in a very desired lilac colour. The set consists of nine cups, saucers and side plates, a large cake plate and a slop bowl. PLEASE NOTE THE BOWL WAS SOLD AND WILL NOT BE INCLUDED The bowl is not really a sugar bowl; in the 19th Century people did not have tea strainers yet so you had a slop bowl to empty your cup of any "slop" of left-behind tea leaves before refilling it. These bowls are a perfect size for fruit, muffins, scones or other sweets.

This set would make a fantastic wedding gift. It has served many generations and is still good for a next journey through life, bringing a unique touch of lasting history!

Wileman (later renamed Shelley and sometimes called Foley) was one of the most respected manufacturers of fine bone china teaware in the late 19th Century, and many of their products are now collector's items. They made many different shapes of cups and the Daisy shape is a popular one - it drinks easily and its flowing, scalloped shape is very elegant.

The Paradise Print pattern on the Daisy shape was registered in 1890. It is a beautiful, elaborate transfer print of tiny little flowers, geometrically arranged in various groupings. It is not hard to see why this print was called "paradise" as it does make you think of Paradise when you look at it. What Charles Wileman gave to Victorian design, which by the last part of the 19th Century had become quite stylised and sometimes even pompous, is very vivid, life-like flowers the way you can find them in any meadow. This is refreshing and often a surprise today. Although this particular pattern has the typical Victorian elements of garlands and a geometric order, these flowers are natural and wild - there is nothing stylised about them.

CONDITION REPORT This set is in excellent usable antique condition. Two of the nine trios are in perfect condition; two have crazed cups but are otherwise good; two have crazed cups and some very slight discolouration at the bottom of the cups and/or some specks; two have crazed cups, some discolouration and each a tiny little nick off the rim (not really visible), and one cup is cracked. The cake plate is in perfect condition. The bowl is in good condition but slightly crazed and has some very slight discolouration at the inside bottom.

Kilns were fired on coal in the late 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. The reason Wileman was able to present high quality tea ware to the middle classes at an affordable price is that they decided to pass items with minor kiln firing blemishes in order to keep costs down. You will see some specks on this set, but it is relatively free from them.

All items carry the Wileman mark at the bottom. They also carry the registration number 6238 hand painted in gold.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS(diameter at the widest point): cup 8.9cm (3.5"), saucer 14cm (5.5"), side plate 18.6cm (7 1/4"), cake plate 23cm (9"), slop bowl 15cm (5 3/4") diameter.
