This is a very stunning part tea set for six, made by Minton in around 1845 during the Rococo Revival period. The set consists of six tea and coffee cup trios, a large cake plate and a slop bowl. The tea and coffee cups share a saucer, as was usual in this period - as you would never drink tea and coffee at the same time, why invest in an extra saucer?

Minton was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Rockingham, Ridgway, Coalport and others. They were located in Staffordshire and were known specifically for their wonderfully fine white bone china and bright colours; there is a colour called "Minton Blue" which is a fresh azure blue that Minton excelled in. Minton supplied huge quantities of tablewares, tiles, and other items to the USA in the 19th Century; the White House has always been supplied with Minton crockery and many great buildings of this era were tiled with Minton tiles. This particular set shows Minton's great skill in gilding, which they achieved by hiring some of the best artists from the French Sevres factory.

This service is made in the famous "Q-shape" (Minton named many of its iconic shapes by the letters of the alphabet). It is an elaborate and beautifully moulded Rococo shape. The tea and coffee cups have wonderfully worked handles - when drinking from a cup, notice the way the handle supports each finger of the hand, making it easy to balance the cup whether you have big or small fingers. The pattern is of a cobalt blue and peach ground with stunning gilding; no cost or effort has been spared in applying this expensive 22Kt gilt, and the set must have been made for a very wealthy customer.

Items are unmarked without even a pattern number, but we know it is Minton because of the iconic shape and the overall high quality.

This tea service would look stunning as a display, but it is still excellent for use and therefore would make a fabulous wedding gift or addition to your own home.

CONDITION REPORT This set has had hardly any wear and most of the items are in absolutely perfect condition. There are four minor issues to note: One teacup has a very light hairline in the foot, which very slightly shines through to the inside - but this is hardly visible. One teacup has a short firing stress line coming off the rim, again hardly visible - these lines are common in items of this era and originates from the firing process in the kiln. One coffee cup has a handle that has been broken and glued back. The glue is modern and most likely a complex epoxy; I have tested it by soaking it in water and it is very unlikely to break off again so the cup can be used. One coffee cup is crazed and has a very slight crazing line coming off the rim, hardly visible. All items look absolutely stunning and the gilding is not rubbed at all. All items except the crazed coffee cup ping well when tapped.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS.
