This is a pair of candelabra made of ormolu on a marble base, made in France in about 1875. The candelabra are made in the Rococo Revival style and each have a boy and girl cherub holding up the sconces, which are shaped like cornucopia. The candelabra will each old two candles (four in total) and will make a stunning centre piece or mantle ornament.
This pair was made in the Rococo Revival style. After a period of elegant classicism, in the mid to late 19th Century the Rococo Revival was popular in France to restore the old ideals of wealth, pride and power of the pre-revolutionary monarchy. There was an abundance of gilt, cherubs, and cornucopia or horns of plenty - exactly like this beautiful pair of candelabra.
The candelabra are made in ormolu, which consists of a bronze body with gilding. The gilt interacts with the bronze and this creates this very alive, slightly uneven colour; less bright than gilt but more vivid than bronze. The base is made of marble with some ormolu sprigs around it, and they each have three bronze feet.
The items are unmarked, which is common for the period they were made in.
