This is a beautiful little tea bowl made by New Hall in about 1795. The bowl is made of fluted hybrid hard paste porcelain and decorated in a "Famille Rose" pattern. The bowl would have been part of a large tea service. It is an orphan; it would have come in a unit of a companion coffee cup and a saucer.
The New Hall factory started as a cooperative of several Staffordshire potters making use of the porcelain license of Bristol Porcelain Company after this went in demise. It quickly grew out to be a leading porcelain maker, and the first to make true porcelain in Staffordshire. New Hall served especially the less wealthy middle classes and therefore made a phenomenal amount of modest yet elegant tableware, like this tea service.
This bowl is made in the typical "hybrid hard paste" porcelain, as New Hall had adapted the original hard paste recipe from Bristol in order to save on production costs. You can tell this by the way the porcelain has a greyish hue and is less milky than bone china. Hybrid porcelain was slightly cheaper to make and very popular among customers who were used to the more stony Chinese Export porcelain.
In the late 18th Century many people still preferred to drink tea from bowls in the Chinese manner and of course they stack much better - teacups with handles were by many still seen as newfangled. Similarly the pattern is after a typical Chinese "Famille Rose" pattern with a band around the rim and little flower sprays with roses.
The bowl is unmarked, as is customary for New Hall.
CONDITION REPORT The bowl is in good condition without any damage or repairs. The rims a little bit rough in places and there is wear on one section of the internal band - some of this might be from production. Please study the pictures carefully.
Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1700s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.
There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

We will do anything we can to follow up faulty deliveries but cannot be held responsible if we have not been notified within the required time period.

Cancellations can only be accepted before the item has been shipped. Once an item has been shipped, the transaction cannot be cancelled anymore.
Returns need to be requested within 2 days of receipt of the item and completed within 14 days from the date they have been agreed in writing.
If you want to return an item because you changed your mind, you will be responsible for the return shipping. For international deliveries, this will need to be a fully tracked shipping mode. The item is expected to be received back in the same state it was sent - any damage due to insufficient packaging will be your responsibility. We will only pay for return shipping if we have mutually agreed that the item did not satisfy your expectations. A refund will be made immediately after receipt of the item.
