This is a gorgeous teacup and saucer produced by Grainger between 1825 and 1830. The shape of this set is called "Royal Flute" in the pattern books, and it is a scallop edged cup and saucer with a large, upwards pointing "Old English" handle. The set is thickly potted in sturdy white bone china and decorated in highly unusual colours; it is therefore a real collectors' item.

This set would make a perfect Valentine's Day gift!

Grainger was one of the leading factories in Worcester in the 19th Century. It started in the early days of British bone china production at the very beginning of the century, and was merged with Royal Worcester about 100 years later. During this era they were among the leaders of china production, producing exceptionally finely painted and sculpted forms, often jewelled, pierced or reticulated and decorated with exceptional art work.

The set has a beautiful decoration of just two kinds of flowers: an English rose and a red cornflower. The colour combination of just pink, orange and a bit of purple in the bud of the cornflower is very unusual, as is the size of the flowers. The cup has beautiful gilding.

The cup and saucer are unmarked but carry the pattern number 1577. An example of a cup with the same shape can be found in Michael Berthoud's "Compendium of British Cups" on page 129, plate 771.

CONDITION REPORT The set is in excellent antique condition without any damage or repairs. It has, however, a few flaws from production: there is a production mark on the rim of the cup, which has been glazed and gilded over by the factory (see last picture). The item is also crazed. Neither flaw is obvious and they do not affect the beauty or quality of the item. Crazing is very common for Grainger items; it was the one weakness of their porcelain and glaze recipes, particularly in the 1820s to 1840s. Crazing does not weaken the item; it is caused by the glazing and the porcelain shrinking at different rates and it often only becomes visible after many decades.

Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. This set is very smooth but you might see some of these specks.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameter): teacup 9cm (3.5"), saucer 14.5cm (5 3/4").

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options.
