On offer is an extremely rare and valuable Aesthetic Movement tea and coffee cup trio made by Brownfield in 1875. Brownfield was one of the major potters of earthenware quality home items, and started to produce porcelain in 1871. Their line of Aesthetic Movement teawares, vases and dinner sets quickly became famous for the imaginative naturalistic designs and this trio is a prime example of that.

This trio is extremely rare. It was made in January 1875, which we can tell from the diamond marks at the bottom, and when researching this, the only other one I could find was a teacup and saucer in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. There is another example of it in Michael Berthoud's book "Compendium of British Cups" in plate 1305, page 218. However, both are teacup duos and this is a tea and coffee trio.

This trio is an early example of the Aesthetic Movement, which started in the early 1870s and was at its peak in the 1880s. The Aesthetic Movement was a rebellion against the overly stylised Victorian designs of those years; rather than creating elaborate designs that used flowers and birds as passive elements to show off wealth and status, flowers, birds and in this case insects were brought to the heart of the design. The flowers and leaves on this cup are central to its design.

This trio has beautifully moulded blossoms; the teacup and saucer have quince blossoms and the coffeecup vanilla blossoms. It doesn't just stop with the flowers; the handles are crafted from twigs and the feet of both cups are made up from the bent ends of the leaves. Every detail is not only enamelled in naturalistic colours, but moulded.

CONDITION REPORT This set is in excellent antique condition with only the minutest signs of wear on the handle (more from handling it than from use). There is a very faint firing stress line opposite the handle of the teacup, barely visible on the inside only.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS teacup stands 6cm (2 3/8") high and measures 9.2cm (3 5/8") in diameter, coffee cup stands 6.7cm (2 5/8") high and measures 6cm (2 3/8") in diameter, saucer 15cm (5 7/8") diameter.

I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options.
