This is a gorgeous Mid-Victorian serving plate made by Ridgway in about 1850. Ridgway was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Minton, Coalport and others. They were located in the Cauldon Pottery and were transformed into Brown-Westhead & Moore about a decade after this plate was made.

Ridgway had a tradition of a very wide-ranging offer of china products, anything from the most sublime dinnerware to humble toilet pots. It is notoriously difficult to identify their wares and this is one reason their beautiful tea and dinner wares are often underestimated. This plate is unmarked, as most Ridgway items, except for the pattern number 8198 painted in puce on the back. This number would point to a production date around 1850.

This plate is small, probably meant for sweets or a small side dish. It is of extraordinary quality - just imagine this being part of a large dinner service and it all being decked out on the table! The plate has a beautiful scalloped shape with flowing handles, each flowing in a different direction, which creates a wonderfully asynchronous effect. The rims of the plate a pierced with four sets of rectangular openings, beautifully cut by hand before the plate was fired. Between the piercings are panels with flower posies of fresh looking flowers such as roses, harebells, forget-me-nots, foxgloves, and a multitude of other flowers that I couldn't identify but look like they came straight from a botanical atlas. The plate is richly gilded with beautiful gilt detail to the centre. The colours are noteworthy: Ridgway had a special ability to make grey and beige look like alive, indeed vibrant colours and this plate is a great example of that.

CONDITION REPORT This set is in perfect antique condition with only light wear to the gilt detail in the centre of the plate, and light wear to the handles and some parts of the rim. There are not chips or cracks and the plate is not cracked; the porcelain is still pristinely white and the plate rings nicely when tapped.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameters) 22cm (8.5").

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS.
