This is a very cute demitasse cup and saucer made by George Jones between 1893 and 1924.

This set has some flaws and is therefore sold As Found (A/F).

George Jones started production of earthenware and majolica in 1861 and of porcelain in 1872. The company was renamed "Crescent China" in 1893, under which name it operated until its closure in 1951 (although this name was already used in marks before that time). The company became famous for its interesting designs in the 19th Century Aesthetic Movement and 20th Century Art Deco.

This set is in the Aesthetic Movement style and I have seen cups in this series from as early as the 1870s. Designers in this movement rebelled against the meaningless ornaments of Victorian design and the traditional shapes. The movement is like a breath of fresh air: lines are clean, designs very cool and interesting. But most importantly, flowers and animals stopped being ornaments and were upgraded to being deserving subjects of each piece of art. As you look at them, you become them; they don't just sit around to adorn our household items; they are going about their business.

These cheerful wreaths of little campanula flowers are bright and certainly the one and only theme of the cup, although the cup itself is interesting in the way it was potted: it has a nice fluted surface reminding you of the famous "Paris Fluted" designs that were done early in the 19th Century by Swansea and Wedgwood.

CONDITION REPORT The set is in good antique condition with some signs of age, but it is fully usable. The cup and saucer are finely crazed, which is visible on some of the pictures. The saucer has a thin short hairline coming off the rim, as well as a short surface hairline in the well, which does not go through the body (see the last two pictures). The cup does not have damage but has a few very faint crazing discolouration on the inside - these are too weak to capture in a picture.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS teacup 5.5cm (2 1/4") high, 5cm (2") diameter at rim; saucer 11.5cm (4.5") diameter.

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS.
