This is an elegant set of three Ridgway dinner plates made between 1815 and 1820, which is known as the Regency period. The plates would have been part of a large dinner set and are decorated with beautiful gilding on a grey background and wonderful hand painted flowers in the centre. The plates are in the famous "moustache" shape.

Ridgway was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Minton, Coalport and others and they created very high quality tea and dinnerware. Ridgway had a tradition of a very wide-ranging offer of china products, anything from the most sublime dinnerware to humble toilet pots. It is notoriously difficult to identify their wares and this is one reason their beautiful tea and dinner wares are often underestimated. Except for the pattern numbers painted in red on the back (4880), these plates are unmarked like most Ridgway items, but the reason we know they were made by Ridgway is because of the shape, which corresponds with known items, and the pattern number itself, which matches the period the plate seems to be from.

The plates are relatively simple in the way they were potted, with nice lobes around the edges and four very slight moulded ornaments at the rim. The ground colour of the design is a beautiful grey; Ridgway was a master at creating beautiful grey and beige that is never boring, but lively and a perfect ground for further decorations. The gilding is rich yet elegant, showing the famous "moustache" shape at the rims and acanthus leaves moving into the recess of the plates - both are typical Ridgway ornaments. The most stunning feature is the bouquets of flowers at the centre. Each plate is different and the flowers are very finely painted. These plates would have been part of a large set of up to 12 or 18 settings, and each one would have been unique!

These plates are a bit too nice to eat from as knife marks could harm the hand painted flowers, but they look fantastic on display and would make a wonderful serving plates for cakes or other sweets.

CONDITION REPORT The plates are in perfect condition with no damage, knife marks or significant wear. The only wear they have is some stacking wear and at a few places some very slight rubbing of the gilt around the edges. The white of the porcelain is still perfectly white on the face of the plates and shows a bit of staining on the back (where it is not visible); the colours of the hand painted flowers are bright and the gilding is mostly entirely untouched, except for the areas mentioned.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!
