This is a beautiful and highly collectable coffee cup and saucer made by Spode around the year 1815. The set is made to the highest standard and in excellent condition.

Coalport was one of the leading potters in the 19th and 20th Century. Founded by the brothers John and Thomas Rose in 1795 in the new town of Coalport in Shropshire just over the border with Staffordshire, they were the peers and competitors of the great Staffordshire potters such as Spode, Ridgway and Minton, and came out with many innovative designs. Many of their items are now collectors' items. Thomas Rose started his own pottery across the canal from John Rose, but it was John Rose who would build the more successful pottery.

This coffee cup is made in the famous "London" shape, which was brought out by Spode in 1813 and was quickly copied by all other makers. It then remained the most popular shape for about 10 years. The set is potted in the finest and whitest porcelain you can imagine.

The decoration on the cup is striking and seems inspired by the French Sevres style: a bright apple green ground with white panels left open for sublime hand painted birds. Any empty space in the design has additional little birds and bugs, from butterflies to ladybugs, dotted across. The gilding is elaborate inside and out, and done to a very high standard. The apple green ground is further decorated with muted dark green garlands, which give the cup a very French style.

There is no marking on the cup other than "F", which is not a pattern number. It is likely that this set is one of the many ones that John Rose had decorated in London by very high quality decorators; many of Coalport's best items of this period were decorated in London and they don't always carry a pattern number. This makes the set highly collectable; it would be a wonderful gift to an antiques lover, and a unique addition to any collection.

CONDITION REPORT The set is in perfect condition with no damage or wear other than one little white spot on the green ground of the saucer. The only other sign of time is some very light crazing on the cup, which is not visible but can be noticed in the fact that the cup only rings half-true. The saucer does ring true.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameters): cup 7cm (2 3/4"), saucer 14.5cm (5 3/4").

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options.
