This is a beautiful Yates cup and saucer made around 1825, which is known as the Regency period. The shape of the cup is typical for its time and the handle is called an "Old English" handle.

The Yates factory was operative between 1784 and 1836 and was mostly based in Shelton, Staffordshire. It worked alongside other more famous potters such as Minton, Spode, Coalport and Ridgway, and produced both earthenwares and porcelain.

The decoration of the cup and saucer are stunning in their colours: a warm yellow ground with rich gilding and beautiful flower posies set in white panels. The yellow ground is rare as yellow was very difficult to fire in those days, so this would have been part of an expensive tea service. The flowers on these items are of a superb artistic level, and show the influence of William Billingsley, the famous painter who revolutionised the way roses were painted on British pottery. The shape of the set is called the "Old English fluted shape" and was very popular in those days. The items are also beautifully gilded in 22Kt gilt. As rooms were lit by candles at the time, you can imagine the flickering light being reflected in the lavish gilt - one important reason to use so much gilt on table ware.

The pattern number is 99.

CONDITION REPORT This cup and saucer are in excellent antique condition with very little wear, except one flaw: there is a faint glazing line in the saucer, only faintly visible from the underside and not going through the porcelain. This flaw is reflected in the price and can be (faintly) seen at 11 o'clock in the picture of the underside of the items. Other than this, there is no damage or noteworthy wear. The saucer has no crazing; the cup has some very light crazing that is hardly visible but can be heard in the sense that the cup does not ring.

Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can also have small firing lines. This set is relatively free from any firing specks but you might see some. There is a tiny firing line in the rim of the cup, too weak to capture in a picture, but this has no bearing on the strength of the cup.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameters): cup 8cm (3 1/8"), saucer 14.8cm (5 5/8").

In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options.
