This is a beautiful coffee cup and saucer made by Spode between 1813 and 1821. The set is made of the highest quality and in sublime condition, which is rare to find.

Josiah Spode was the great pioneer among the Georgian potters in England. Around the year 1800 he perfected the bone china recipe that has been used by everyone ever since, and he was also the leading potter behind the technique of transferware, making it possible for English potters to replace the Chinese export china, which had come to an end around that time, with their own. This was fundamental to a thriving industry that would last for about 150 years and provide half the world with their tableware.

This coffee cup is made in the famous "London" shape, which was brought out by Spode in 1813 and was quickly copied by all other makers. It then remained the most popular shape for about 10 years. The set is potted in the finest and whitest porcelain you can imagine - by the year 1810 Spode had perfected his recipe for bone china and it became beautifully smooth, white, thin and translucent.

The decoration on the cup is a very striking Imari pattern, painted in a bold and confident hand. The cobalt blue, orange/red and peach colours are sublimely balanced with the rich gilt. Between 1805 and 1824 Henry Daniel was in charge of all decorations at the Spode factory, and this cup shows the incredible level of skill that was built up. Looking at the high degree of refinement and perfection, as well as the fact that there is no pattern number, it is likely that this cup was originally part of a large service for a VIP customer.

As mentioned, there is no pattern number on this set. There is an imprinted 6 or 9, which is probably a potter's mark. Both items are marked with a red Spode mark as used between 1810 and 1821.

This set would be a wonderful gift to an antiques lover, and a unique addition to any collection.

CONDITION REPORT The cup is in perfect condition with no damage and only the very slightest sign of stacking wear and no wear of actual use.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameters): cup 7.2cm (2 7/8"), saucer 14cm (5.5").

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS
