This is a beautiful coffee cup and saucer made around 1815, which is known as the Regency period. The shape of this cup is typical for this period and is called "London". As in all teacup sets of that period, the saucer does not have a well; it was not until the second half of the 1820s that potters started to make wells in their saucers, thereby creating more security for the cup.

It is not known with certainty who made this cup as there are no markings at all (not even a pattern number) but it is likely that it was either New Hall or Ridgway, who were both among the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Minton and Coalport.

The decorations of the cup and saucer have stunning colours. beautifully painted pink dog roses are set against a periwinkle blue background; a wonderfully fresh and crisp colour combination. The roses are painted in great detail; not only the flowers but look at the leaves and the buds, even the stems - it is all done with utter delicacy and taste, and beautifully highlighted in gilt. The rims of both items are set with a nice abstract navy blue and gilt band - and that's quite unusual in itself as dark blue was usually cobalt blue, not the slightly flatter navy blue, which is a better combination with the periwinkle.

The subject of the decoration deserves a word; this is not some wonderful big rose that you find in a wealthy person's garden, but the humble dog rose, basically a weed that can grow into huge bushes and even trees that you can find along any English country road or river. I have one in my garden and it behaves like a most wonderful weed, feeding the birds throughout the winter. It is typical of the early 19th Century that an artist would take such a common flower and turn it into a true piece of art.

CONDITION REPORT This cup and saucer are in perfect antique condition and both ring like a bell. There are no firing faults but there are some stray bits of paint, as often happened with items made in this era - true hand work! Except for some very slight stacking wear, there is no rubbing of the pattern or gilt - the cup looks like it's mostly been on display. It is rare to find a cup this age in such good condition!

Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. This set is relatively free from any firing specks but you might see some.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameters): cup 8.2cm (3 1/4"), saucer 14cm (5.5").
