On offer is a beautiful coffeecup and saucer made by Coalport in about 1870, hand painted with beautiful song birds.
Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th Century Staffordshire, coming out with many innovative designs. Many of their items are now collectors' items and this is certainly the case for this coffeecup.
This set is in the Mid-Victorian style, when design left behind the opulent fashion of the Rococo Revival. This was the period when Queen Victoria was in mourning over her beloved husband Albert, and the entire Empire joined her in that mourning. In design this can be seen as a more simple fashion without elaborate moulding. Yet this cup and saucer are beautifully decorated: the ground colour is duck egg blue, a favourite colour at the time, and the birds are finely painted in natural colours. The birds and the foliage around them seem to be in the style of John Randall, the famous and unequalled bird painter who made Coalport famous in the mid to late 19th Century - but they don't seem to be done by Randall as they are a bit more rough than he would have painted them. Nevertheless, the painting is of superb quality. The cup handles are moulded in a beautiful square form, giving a hint of the Aesthetic Movement that was just becoming very popular.
This pattern doesn't have a known number but the design is famous for its beauty and simplicity, and this cup is a real collectors' item.
The cup is entirely unmarked, the saucer has an imprinted mark that cannot be read but that is probably a year cypher.
CONDITION REPORT This set is free from damage or repairs. As many Coalport items of this era, it is crazed; crazing is a sign of age and the result of the glaze shrinking at a different rate than the porcelain. It is a process that is started in the kiln at the time of production, but is often only visible after many decades. It is a normal sign of age that does not affect the strength or quality of the item. The gilt on this item is quite rubbed; please study the pictures carefully.
Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. You can see quite a few stray paint marks on the underside of the saucer.
There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!
DIMENSIONS (diameters) cup 6.5cm (2 5/8"), saucer 13.5cm (5 1/4").
