This is a Coalport teacup trio consisting of a cup, saucer and side plate, decorated with the iconic "Batwing" pattern in apple green. The set was made some time between 1891 and 1920.

Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th Century Staffordshire, coming out with many innovative designs. Many of their items are now collectors' items and this is certainly the case for the rather spectacular batwing series.

This series gained the nickname of "batwing" not only because of the design, the coloured patches of which strongly resemble flying bats, but also because of the cup handles, which look like bat wings. The series came in various colours such as apple green, cobalt blue, pink, yellow and dark red. There is also a theory that the shape was derived from a traditional Chinese decoration of a scary monster that served to protect the drinker from evil. This striking detail was copied by European painters, who had no context for it and over time it got more and more abstracted. We will never know whether that was true, but it is certainly a very striking pattern, and one of Coalport's most popular ones!

The little flower posies were printed in outline and then coloured in by hand with enamel paint. The details are done very finely and with lavish gilt, and this set has the wonderfully bright apple green colour.

On the bottom the cup and saucer have a "leadless glaze" stamp that came into being in 1891, when pressure was put onto the Potteries to change their recipes to protect their workers' health and reduce the cases of lead poisoning. They also have a "Maple & Co, Tottenham Court Rd, London" retailers stamp. The side plate has a normal Coalport stamp. The cup also has the hand painted pattern number Y2665.

CONDITION REPORT This set is in excellent condition with no damage and little wear. Unlike most Coalport items of this era, there is no crazing on the cup and saucer, however, the side plate is crazed. There is some rubbing to the gilt, as can be expected from an item this age (please see pictures). Otherwise the set has no damage or wear and looks stunning.

Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s and early 1900s and this could cause particles to fly around in the kiln. The inconsistent temperature of coal fires could affect the glazing and cause crazing right at the start of the production process. You might see some specks under the glazing and this is normal for items of this age and should not be seen as damage. If there is crazing I will mention this in the condition report.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameters) cup 9.5cm, saucer 14.2cm, side plate 15.7cm.
