This is a beautiful plate made by Chelsea in about 1758.

Chelsea was one of the very early adopters of porcelain in the British china industry. Founded in 1744 the Chelsea pottery was for about 40 years the leading maker of fine chinaware, excelling in their sense of style, perfection and constant innovation and inspiring many following generations of china makers.

The company was started by French silversmith Nicholas Sprimont and you can see the influence of the French style of silverware in the shape of the lobed plate, which is taken from an earlier version in silver that Sprimont made early in his career.

Chelsea items are very rare as production levels were still low at the time and of course many items simply have not survived. The Chelsea pottery was only in production for about 30 years, which further adds to the scarceness of the items; it is rare to come across Chelsea items.

The plate is moulded in the "feathered" shape with fine feather-like shapes on the rim that have been picked out in puce and gilt - although the gilt has worn off. These were inspired by the silver items that Nicholas Sprimont would have designed previously. In the centre of the plate is a river landscape painting, and spread over the plate are various butterflies and bugs; these are not placed in planned locations, but where ever there was a blemish to hide, as was usual at the time.

This plate is of the Red Anchor period, probably around 1758. It is unmarked.

CONDITION REPORT The plate is stable but has a large crack through the middle, which seems to have glue added on one side. There are two chips off the feathered rim, and the decorations are worn. The gilt has worn off. All these flaws are clearly visible in the pictures, please study them carefully.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS 21.5cm (8.5").

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS.
