This is a very adorable Tea for Two set consisting of two demitasse cups and a 1-pint teapot, made by Charles Wileman in 1889. The shape of the items is called "Alexandra". All items are bright white with gilding on the rims and the handles. These demitasse sets were made as cabaret sets that came on a tray - this one obviously lost its tray as well as two cups and the milk jug and sugar bowl.

This set is in perfect usable condition and would make a perfect gift for a wedding or engagement!

Wileman (later renamed Shelley and sometimes called Foley) was one of the most respected manufacturers of fine bone china tea sets in the late 19th and early 20th Century, and many of their products are now collector's items. They made many different shapes of cups and the Alexandra shape is without doubt one of the most sought after, eccentric and amazing shapes Wileman ever produced. It is square, intensely fluted, and although it perhaps looks a little bizarre, it drinks surprisingly well.

Wileman brought out a whole series in various plain colours 1889.

This set would make a stunning gift for a wedding or engagement!

CONDITION REPORT This set is in excellent antique condition with no chips or repairs. The teacups and saucers are also free from any cracks or firing cracks. The teapot has a small firing crack at the outside bottom that seems to not go through the body and has never crept up the wall, so does not seem to pose a risk of further damage. There is a small area of surface crazing on the inner rim of the teapot. All items are crazed or micro-crazed and therefore do not ring, however the crazing is mostly invisible with the naked eye and has not caused any discolouration. The fact that they are not discoloured is rare for Alexandra items, which tend to craze strongly and often become a bit beige in the 120 or 130 years they have been around. The gilding is slightly rubbed on the teacups. The teapot is heavily rubbed at the handle and finial (a sign of very frequent use) but the spout is largely unrubbed with only some rubbing at the very tip. The rubbing is commensurate with age.

Kilns were fired on coal in the late 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. One reason Wileman was able to bring high quality tableware on the market for modest prices is that they decided to pass items with firing specks rather than discarding them and creating waste (and extra cost). These items are relatively free from these imperfections except the afore mentioned small firing crack at the bottom of the teapot.

The only way these items are marked is by the Alexandra shape number 60650 printed in black on the cups and the teapot, and imprinted into the saucers. As the items did not go through a pattern printing process, Wileman probably did not bother to apply the mark; it is beyond a shade of doubt though that the printed numbers correspond to the shape and the items are genuine Wileman items.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameter at the widest point): cup 8cm (3 1/8"), saucer 12.2cm (4 7/8"), teapot measures 16.5cm (6.5") from spout to handle and stands 12cm (4 3/4") high to highest point of handle. The teapot serves 1 pint (1/2 litre or 20 oz).

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS.
