This is a stunning cabaret set made by Royal Crown Derby in 1892. It consists of a large tray, teapot, four demitasse cups and saucers, a milk jug and a lidded sugar box. All items are made of bone china. The set is printed with the Imari-inspired pattern no. 2712, one of the lesser-known patterns Royal Crown Derby brought out.

Crown Derby was one of the most prominent potteries right from the start of English porcelain production in the late 1700s to the demise of the industry in the 1960s. Their items are of exceptionally high quality and many of the designs have become iconic. In 1890 they received the addition "Royal" to their name, which means the Royal Family gave their protection to the company. This set was made shortly after that; it was a hugely productive period in which they came out with many newly stylised Imari designs in terracotta red, cobalt blue and gilt. This is one of the lesser know ones; it is very graceful with beautiful little sprigs of what looks like hop and flowers, as well as typically Asian Imari details around the edges.

The shape of the set is interesting. While many designs in the mid 1800s were round and flowing, this one is rectangular and quite modern with its slick shapes. Yet the teapot, sugar box and milk jug are clearly inspired by the "boat" designs of the 1810s. So this set is a wonderful mix of styles: traditional Asian, early 19th Century, and more modern late 19th Century shapes.

This is a "cabaret" set, which usually is a set like this with four small teacups, a teacup, creamer and sugar box. Cabaret is a term often used for entertainment, so it could be that these sets are meant to be carried around by servants through a room or garden while people are enjoying entertainment - or perhaps it points to the way a room can be set up for entertainment in the "cabaret" style in which all chairs and tables are flocked in groups around the room, enabling everyone to see the entertainer.

The set is in spectacularly good condition and good for use, and it would make a wonderful addition to any interior design - whether modern or classic.

CONDITION REPORT This set is in perfect antique condition. It has had no wear (not even any rubbing of the gilt) and there is no damage whatsoever. It is spectacular to find a set in such good condition!

Kilns were fired on coal in the late 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. This set is relatively free from these imperfections, save some very small specks.

All items carry the famous Royal Crown Derby mark in red. Hand painted in red on each item is the registration number 2712.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!
