This is a stunning cabaret set made by Charles Wileman in 1893. It consists of a tray, teapot, four demitasse cups and saucers, a milk jug and a sugar bowl. All items are made of bone china except the tray, which is made of semi porcelain. The set is printed with the Ivy Print pattern in green and beige, a wonderfully delicate colour combination. With the flowing Empire shape of the items and the soft colours, this set is certainly worthy of an Empress!

Wileman (later renamed Shelley and sometimes called Foley) was one of the most respected manufacturers of fine bone china tea sets in the late 19th and early 20th Century, and many of their products are now collector's items. They made many different shapes of cups and the Empire shape is sought after for its dignity and grace.

The Ivy Print pattern was registered in 1893. It is a very simple pattern of ivy gently trailing off the rims of each item, and what is interesting with this pattern is that although Wileman printed it in up to 12 colours, its character changes with the colours used; while for instance the red version is bold and crisp, this green and beige variety is delicate and dreamy.

The set is still good for use and makes a spectacular display; it would be a fabulous gift for a wedding or special occasion and would be a beautiful addition to any interior.

CONDITION REPORT This set is in excellent antique condition. There are some issues that are all minor in nature, which I will describe here in detail. As I was not able to upload pictures of all issues please feel free to ask for more pictures. The tray is in sound condition although crazed on both sides, and it has a 1" hairline off the underside of one of the lobes (not visible when in position). All cups are micro-crazed and do not ring true, but they have no further issues. All saucers are uncrazed and ring true. The sugar bowl is micro-crazed. The jug has a 2" hairline near the inside bottom, however this is on the surface and does not go through the body. The teapot has a completely sound body, but there is a small chip off the inside rim that leads into a hairline running up to the edge of the shoulder; opposite this point is a similar hairline running up to the shoulder only. There is a production scrape off the handle of the teapot, and a very tiny chip off the tip of the spout (hard to notice). Overall the gilding of the set is nearly untouched. Given that this set is nearly 125 years old it is in stunning condition, which is extremely rare particularly for the teapot, and it is good for use although it is advisable care should be taken with the temperature of boiling water to be poured into the pot; it is best to let it cool just below boiling temperature before use.

Kilns were fired on coal in the late 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. One reason Wileman was able to bring high quality tableware on the market for modest prices is that they decided to pass items with firing specks and scrapes rather than discarding them and creating costly waste. This set is relatively free from these imperfections, save some specks and the mentioned scrape, but you will see some under the glazing.

All items carry the famous large Wileman mark in green with the Ivy Print pattern registration number 208329 . Hand painted in gold on each item is the registration number 5043.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameter at the widest point): cup 8.6cm (3 3/8"), saucer 13cm (5 1/8"), sugar bowl 10.2cm (4"), tray 37.7cm (17 7/8"), milk jug stands 7cm (2 3/4") high and measures 10.2cm (4") from handle to mouth, teapot stands 12cm (4 3/4") high incl. finial/handle and measures 23cm (9") from handle to spout.
