This is a very charming cabaret set made by Charles Wileman in or shortly after 1893. It consists of a tray, a tea or coffeepot, two demitasse cups and saucers and a milk jug. All items are made of bone china except the tray, which is made of semi porcelain. The set is printed with the Daisy Cluster  pattern in pink and beige, a wonderfully delicate colour combination. The shape of the items is called "Foley", after the kiln that the Wileman factory used.

Sets like these are sometimes called "Tete a Tete", which is a French expression for an intimate conversation between two people.

Wileman (later renamed Shelley and sometimes called Foley) was one of the most respected manufacturers of fine bone china tea sets in the late 19th and early 20th Century, and many of their products are now collector's items. They made many different shapes of cups and the Foley shape is quite rare. It is a wonderful retake on the assymetrical rococo shapes of the mid 18th Century.

The Daisy Clusters pattern was registered in 1893. It consists of cheerful daisy flowers scattered over the items. They are applied by transfer and are influenced by the Aesthetic Movement, which was at its height in the 1880s and took flowers out of their ornamental role and put them at the heart of decorations. You can see that in this pattern; the flowers are very alive and realistic and don't stop at being ornaments.

The set has some damage but looks absolutely stunning and is probably still good for careful use; importantly the teapot (which can also be used as a coffee pot as it is a tall design) has no damage to the body or the spout.

All items carry the large Wileman stamp and the pattern number 6802 painted in gold.

CONDITION REPORT As mentioned the set looks fabulous but has various issues, which are listed here. All items are crazed. There is some kiln dust under the glazing at places, and there are a few small stress breaks from production in the rims of items, as is normal for items this age. One cup has a very tight hairline, barely visible other than its onset, which is a small bite out of the rim. One saucer has a star hairline, which can best be seen at the underside. The same saucer has a surface chip off the rim. The pot has a surface chip off the outside of the rim. Both chips are very hard to see because they blend in with the scalloped moulding at the rims. There are a few very small nicks at the foot of items, which are not visible when in position and have no effect on the structure of the items. I was not able to add enough pictures to show all the various issues but please feel free to ask for more pictures!

Kilns were fired on coal in the late 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. One reason Wileman was able to bring high quality tableware on the market for modest prices is that they decided to pass items with firing specks and scrapes rather than discarding them and creating costly waste. As mentioned, this set is crazed and has some kiln dust under the glazing, as well as a few little stress points in the rims.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameter at the widest point): pot stands 15.5cm (6 1/8") high incl. finial and measures 17cm (8") from handle to spout; milk jug stands 9cm (3.5") and measures 8.5cm (3 3/8") from mouth to handle; cup diameter 6cm (2 3/8"), saucer diameter 8cm (3 1/8"); and tray diameter at widest point 37.5cm (15 3/4").

SHIPPING I ship worldwide from the UK, mostly by Royal Mail 2nd Class for the UK and International Tracked and Signed for the rest of the world. I am happy to combine shipping charges on multiple items - please contact me to discuss. In principle I do not make a profit on shipping although for simplicity's sake I charge flat shipping fees. If the fee charged greatly exceeds the actual cost I will gladly refund you the difference - at the same time if it is slightly lower I will gladly make up the difference. In some countries shipping will end up significantly more than the expected fees and I will contact you to discuss our options. PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING SHIPPING COSTS AND OPTIONS.
