This is a beautifully hand painted tea and coffee cup trio made by Minton between 1836 and 1841.

Minton was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Ridgway, Coalport and others. They were located in Staffordshire and were known specifically for their wonderfully fine white bone china and bright colours; there is a colour called "Minton Blue" which is a fresh azure blue that Minton excelled in. Minton supplied huge quantities of tablewares, tiles, and other items to the USA in the 19th Century; the White House has always been supplied with Minton crockery and many great buildings of this era were tiled with Minton tiles.

This cup trio consists of a teacup, coffee cup and a saucer, as was customary at the time - as you would never drink tea and coffee at the same time, why pay for an extra saucer? This trio was made between 1836 and 1841, which is known as the Minton-Boyle period. It is set in the Rococo Revival era, which saw increasingly elaborate tableware as the British Empire was recovering from the Napoleonic Wars that had stifled its finances for years. The design of this trio is called the "Q-shape" and was very popular among Minton table ware. Its rims are beautifully moulded, the cups are nicely footed, generously open at the rim and they have wonderfully elaborate handles. The colour is incredibly bright apple green - one of the colours Minton was famous for. Apart from the lavish gilt detail, the items are adorned with some small and unassuming single hand painted flowers, creating a wonderful combination of green, gilt and flower detail. it is worth having a close look at the flowers as they are not lavish; they can be found in any normal British summer garden.

Each item is unmarked except for the pattern number 4829, which is from a bit earlier than 1836 but probably was still used well into the 1840s.

CONDITION REPORT The set is in perfect antique condition with no damage or repairs, and no visible wear even in the well of the saucer. All items ring like a bell when tapped and the gilding is not rubbed. The cups seem to have never been used.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameters): teacup 10.4cm (4 1/8"), coffee cup 8.5cm (3 3/8"), saucer 14.3cm (5 5/8").
