This is an absolutely stunning set of 10 dinner plates made by Coalport between 1820 and 1825. The plates have moulded rims and have a spectacular design of birds, flowers and elaborate gilding.

Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th Century, bringing out many innovative designs. The pottery emerged around the year 1800 in Shropshire, right on the edge of Staffordshire and near other great makers such as Spode, Minton, Davenport and many others. They went on to become a major potter in the 19th Century and brought out many iconic designs. Coalport designs from the first half of the 19th Century stand out with their beautifully potted shapes, artful designs and bright colours.

These plates originate from a time that was a transition between the Georgian designs of the early 19th century, which were quite sparse (Britain was fighting the Napoleonic wars and there was little money to invest in new styles), and the Rococo Revival which started in 1820 and brought increasingly lavish designs up to the 1850s.

The plates have a beautiful cobalt blue ground and lavish gilding. Each plate has a characteristic star detail in the centre, and what is visually interesting is that this detail is set in a square form, which contrasts nicely with the round plate. Each plate then has two panels with birds and two with flowers. The stunning thing about this set is that each bird is different, as well as each flower formation. All are painted carefully in an amazing diversity of species and colours. Most birds are looking left, but two are looking right; most are looking straight ahead with their beaks closed but one bird is perched down and seems to be singing. The flower formations are spectacular too; they reveal a great number of rose species as well as all kinds of more humble garden flowers. Lastly, the plates have beautifully moulded gadrooned rims, which are accentuated with gilt.

Each plate is slightly different in thickness and size, which is another proof that the plates were made in the early 1820s, before throwing and firing in the kilns became more mechanised, leading to more uniform plates. It is also obvious that the plates have been painted by different hands; some are more simple while others are more elaborate and seem to have been painted by a more confident hand. There is for instance a simple black and white bird, which comes on a plate with more simple flowers, while some other birds are very colourful and are accompanied by very dense flower formations.

Most of the plates have an impressed "2" with the iconic closed loop that Coalport used, as well as an anchor device. The combination of these two impressed marks means the plates were made between 1820 and 1825, which is consistent with their gadrooned rims and the style of the hand painted decorations.

CONDITION REPORT This set is in excellent antique condition. There are no chips and cracks and the decorations are only slightly worn here and there; the close up pictures give a realistic idea of the level of wear. Most plates must have micro-crazing as they do not ring true, or ring only half-true, but none have obvious crazing that can be seen with the eye. The gilding is almost unworn except for some places in the centre of the plates, see pictures.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!

DIMENSIONS (diameter): about 24.5cm (9 3/4") - sizes can vary by one or two mm or so.
