This is a extraordinary Coalport dessert serving dish made around 1830, which is known as the Regency period. The plate would have been part of a large dinner set and is decorated with pierced and scrolled rims, rich gilding on a maroon background and wonderful hand painted flowers.

Coalport was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Minton, Ridgway and others and they created very high quality tea and dinnerware. Except for the pattern number painted in red on the back (3/139), this plate is unmarked like most Coalport items; retailers wanted to keep secret where their stock was produced because they were worried that their customers would go to the potteries directly and cut out their trade.

The dish is beautifully potted with one handle. The rims are elaborately scrolled and have four areas of piercings; the scrolls all accentuated with gilt decoration. The border of the plate is a deep maroon and the centre has four areas of floral sprigs. These sprigs are painted with exceptional skill; Coalport was able to attract some of the best painters in the country and it is likely that the painter of this plate originated from the Swansea or Nantgarw potteries, which had all but closed down by then, scattering the highly skilled and talented flower painters over other English potteries.

It is obvious that this plate would have been made for a very wealthy customer. Piercing borders needed expert skills that were reserved for the more expensive items only. Firing this deep maroon colour was very difficult in those days because the kiln temperature had to be exactly right, otherwise the colour would turn brown. The unpredictable temperatures of the coal-fired kilns would have caused a high percentage of wasted items, driving up the cost. It is also clear that the flowers were painted by some of the best painters, whose time and skill would have been expensive. It is amazing to imagine a large table decked out in a dinner service of this shape and pattern, the gilt flickering in candle light!

CONDITION REPORT The plate is in extraordinary antique condition with no wear or damage at all. Its only flaw is that the glazing is crazed, however this has not had any impact on the decorations so the plate still looks fantastic and the porcelain has remained bright white. Apart from the crazing and one scratch to the gilt detail at the very heart of the plate, the plate is in mint condition; it has obviously always been on display and has never been used. It is hard to find a plate in such untouched condition.

Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. This set is relatively free from any firing specks but you will see a few very small specks under the glaze.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!
