This is a beautiful dinner plate made around the year 1825. The plate is most likely an "Old Paris" plate, which means it could be made by any of the 30 or so factories that were active in and around Paris at the time.

The plate is decorated in three ways that are all very striking. Firstly, it is expertly potted with beautiful piercings and moulded acanthus leaves around the rim - both were very fashionable in the 1820s. Secondly, the ground colour of the rim is a very striking pink. Pink was very hard to fire in those days as it needed the exact right temperature, otherwise the colour would turn ugly - but in a time when kilns were fired on unreliable coal fires you can imagine how hard that was! Thirdly and most strikingly, there are the wonderful hand painted ranunculus flowers in the centre of the plate. The painter spared no effort on these flowers. They are very detailed, each have a different colour, and even the leaves are very precise and colourful.

This plate would make a wonderful display for someone who loves antiques, or simply anything pink.

CONDITION REPORT The plate is in excellent antique condition with no damage and it rings true when tapped. The only visible sign of age is some rubbing to the gilding and a few spots of wear on the pink ground colour. The flower detail is in very good condition.

Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. This set is relatively free from any firing specks but you might see some.

Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account.

There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures!
